We all need to be aware that in the event of a nuclear attack / leakage / emergency, the UK government has stock piled Potassium Iodine tablets. These stock piles are said to be in various confidential locations near cities thorough the UK

Example event: A location such as a power station has and emergency incident which causes a radiation leak that impacts on the wider environment.

There are schools of thought that say “give them to us now” as if there is a nuclear event it is likely that there will be mass pandemonium and/or the authorities will have problems distributing them at the required speed.

We strongly feel it would be better for us to have the medication at home so that we could ingest it when necessary and make our way to a safe zone. As it stands we will have to clamber to a collection point perhaps wait in a long queue and after the Potassium Iodine tablets have been ingested find our way to a safe zone.

Why Potassium Iodine as a medication? - Potassium Iodine floods the thyroid gland with pure iodine which has the effect of stopping radioactive iodine reaching the glands, as a consequence the ingester is afforded some protection. Potassium Iodide (chemical name 'KI') is much more familiar to most than they might first expect. It is the ingredient added to your table salt to make it iodized salt. Potassium Iodide (KI) is approximately 76.5% iodine.

Thou it is widely reported that the Irish government has sent Potassium Iodine tablets to all ROI households we have yet to discover one such family.

There a number of arguments for and against distributing Potassium Iodine now, but we think given the time that the authorities have to make decisions after an event has occurred, it would seem prudent to distribute them now “Chance favours the prepared”.

Please Note: Potassium Iodine as a remedy is not likely to be suitable for Dirty Bombs, this type of bomb is not likely to contain radio iodide it is more likely to contain plutonium or cobalt. Protection from this type of bomb would require a protective suit, gloves and mask.
