Practitioners of Indian ayurvedic medicine have used guggul, also known as gugulipid for 2,500 years to lower cholesterol and treat obesity. Science is now backing up the traditional use of this substance.
Researchers have found that the steroid guggulsterone, the active agent in Guggul extract, blocks the activity of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) on cells. FXR affects bile acids, which are produced from cholesterol and released by the liver. Bile acids act as shuttles, escorting cholesterol out of the body. By controlling bile acids, guggulsterone plays a role in lowering lipids.
To discover this mechanism behind gugguls cholesterol-lowering abilities, researchers fed one group of mice a high-cholesterol diet with guggulsterone for a week, and fed another group a high-cholesterol diet without guggulsterone. Then they measured cholesterol levels in the liver of the two groups of animals. In mice not fed guggulsterone, the cholesterol level in the liver shot upwards. In mice fed guggulsterone and a high-cholesterol diet, however, the cholesterol level remained low. In mice bred to lack FXR, their cholesterol levels skyrocketed after high-cholesterol feeding, even with guggul treatment. Furthermore, one researcher involved in the study was taking statin drugs to lower his own cholesterol. After taking guggul, his total serum cholesterol declined by 10%.
