Phase 2© helps reduce the absorption of starch from foods by inhibiting the action of alpha amylase, a starch-specific enzyme produced in the body. The end result is starch is not broken down into glucose, but is eliminated without being absorbed. Starch is a carbohydrate found in foods, such as potatoes, pasta, rice and bread. Recent data suggests that Phase 2© may also slow down the rate of sugar absorption into the bloodstream. Phase 2© is naturally derived from the common white bean and is stimulant-free.
Starch is simply a long chain of glucose (sugar) molecules that must be split off one by one through amylase?s digestive action, before the starch molecules can be absorbed. Starch that isn?t digested, in effect, becomes fiber, which then passes on unabsorbed through the digestive tract for eventual excretion. A 2001 study using rats found that an alpha-amylase inhibitor (starch blocker) decreased amylase activity by 50 to 75 percent. Since starch is the chief carbohydrate of grains, beans, starchy vegetables (potatoes, squash), nuts and seeds, an effective starch blocker can nullify many of the calories contained in these foods.
Even more importantly, an effective starch blocker can reduce the amount of insulin secreted by the pancreas in response to eating a high starch meal. Insulin is the chief pro-fat hormone of the body. It promotes the conversion of incoming glucose (from starch or sugar) and dietary fat into stored body fat, and it inhibits the body from releasing fat already stored and burning it for energy. The more glucose absorbed, the greater the release of fat-promoting insulin. By significantly reducing the absorption of glucose from ingested starch, a starch blocker can thus reduce insulin and subsequent fat formation.
A series of human trials has found that starch blockers do promote weight loss, even without dieting! E. Thom reported in 2000 that a product combining Phase 2 and garcinia led to an average weight loss of 7.7 pounds in 20 volunteers during a 12-week study, compared to 2.6 pounds in 20 volunteers who had taken placebos. No diet was required in the study.
