Some very interesting information emerged at the December, 2000 meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology concerning the popular herbal supplement, saw palmetto
berry, and its potential to fight prostate cancer cells. Saw palmetto berry extract is well known and studied for its ability to alleviate the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). With this in mind, a group in Massachusetts headed by Dr. C. Pail Sharma decided to conduct laboratory experiments to investigate saw palmetto berry extracts impact on both generic cancer cell lines and prostate cancer cell lines.
It is important to note that these experiments were conducted in petri dishes (in vitro) and not in human subjects (in vivo). Nonetheless, the results of these experiments are very positive. The growth of both cancer cell lines was slowed by exposure to saw palmetto berry extract. Only one-fifth the amount of berry extract was needed to decrease the cell growth of the prostate cancer cells compared to the amount needed to slow down the growth of the generic cancer cell lines, stated Dr. Goldmann, one of the Massachusetts researchers. These results suggest that saw palmetto berry extracts cancer-fighting properties are fairly specific to prostate cancer.
Saw palmetto berry extract also helps to reduce hair loss. Because of its ability to block the formation of the hair follicle-killing dehydrotestosterone, many people (men and women!) find that saw palmetto berry extract enhances hair growth and luster.
