Product Code: NHP-729-7822120 caps (100mcg)Improve responses to oxidation at the cellular level
Selenium is an active component of the glutathione peroxidase enzyme, and as such works with vitamin E and other nutrients to promote and improve responses to oxidation at the cellular level. This trace mineral has also been shown to help men and women with challenging immune conditions. Selenium is naturally found in organ meats, seafood, grains and seeds, but the amount in food varies. Selenium is not readily found in refined foods. Selenium caps provide 100 mcg of selenium, with 50 percent from selenomethionine and 50 percent from selenium amino acid chelate.
Selenium may reduce first signs of metabolic syndrome in healthy adults
The results of a study suggest that higher intakes of selenium in healthy young adults are linked to reduced levels of a marker related to the metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. It has been linked to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Serum complement factor 3 (C3) has been found to be a marker for increased risk of the metabolic syndrome and can be used as a way to evaluate a person?s risk of developing the syndrome.
Selenium important for skin health
In a study, investigators analyzed the possible correlation between serum levels of select antioxidant nutrients and the development of skin cancer. In this study, serum levels of carotenoids, alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) and selenium were measured in 485 adults at the beginning of the study. The subjects were monitored for the incidence of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin for 8 years.
The results showed that higher serum selenium concentrations were associated with decreased incidence of both basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and conversely, lower serum selenium concentrations were associated with increased incidence of both types of cancer. Furthermore, the subjects with the highest selenium levels had a decreased risk of basal cell tumors by 57 percent and decreased risk of developing squamous cell tumors by 64 percent, compared to subjects with the lowest levels. The study did not show a correlation between serum levels of carotenoids or alpha-tocopherol concentrations and incidence of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
Selenium studied for its effects on bladder function
Researchers measured selenium levels in the toenails of 767 subjects newly diagnosed with bladder cancer and compared them with the selenium levels of 1,108 people from the general population. The researchers found no links between selenium levels and bladder cancer in the whole group of subjects studied. However, in women with the highest levels of selenium, there were significant reductions in risk. Women with the highest selenium levels had a 34 percent reduced risk compared to women with the lowest levels. Moderate smokers with the highest levels of selenium had a 39 percent reduced risk and participants with high selenium levels who had p53 positive cancer had a 43 percent reduced risk.
The findings are consistent with past studies that have found that low selenium levels are linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer in women. This current study is said to be the first to show an association between selenium and p53 positive bladder cancer. Alterations in the p53 gene are thought to be one of the major pathways in which bladder cancer develops. Bladder cancers related to these p53 alterations are associated with more advanced disease.
